The project is part of the artistic and cultural education program in schools, a mandatory activity in elementary schools.
The project was carried out during the 2018-2019 school year, in both Fulchiron and Gerson elementary schools in the Old Lyon.
The pupils’ practice is at the heart of the project, which aims to raise awareness among children in year 5 and 6 classes (aged 9-10 years) in both schools, of the heritage of their neighborhood and living environment, and to have them create and produce artistic works related to the surrounding heritage.
The twenty-one works created by the seventy pupils from the three classes participating in the project are shown over a two-week period, from 13 to 28 September 2019, at the Old Lyon annex of the Town Hall of the 5th district of Lyon, on the occasion of the 2019 Lyon Biennale of Contemporary Art.
A unique encounter between an artist, Erutti and the children:
supervised by the artist, the children expressed their creativity and created works expressing their feelings, their imagination, and their today’s view of the Old Lyon heritage, which is their daily living environment.
A project initiated by the neighborhood council Quartiers Anciens, with the financial support of the City of Lyon (Projects in favor of the Initiatives of the neighborhood councils):
the project is coordinated by the neighborhood council with the two elementary schools Fulchiron and Gerson of the Old Lyon; the MJC (Maison de la Jeunesse et de la Culture) of the Old Lyon is associated for the organization of the dissemination of the project to the inhabitants of the Old Lyon, on the occasion of the 2019 Lyon Biennale of Contemporary Art.
It is the neighborhood council Quartiers Anciens which historically initiated the project of
in situ contemporary art installations in the Old Lyon during the Lyon Biennale.
In summary, the project began in the fall of 2018 with a guided visit to the Old Lyon with André Pelletier, an honorary university professor specializing in the history of the city of Lyon. He told the children the history of the Old Lyon and its main monuments. The pupils chose heritage elements that interested them and diverted them with other pieces from contemporary art. Their creative work was spread over the 2018-2019 school year, supervised by the intervening artist, Erutti.
Among the works produced, a well of the Renaissance period, a sculpture inspired by Roman shipwrecks, a gargoyle head transformed into a frog, Claudian tables (Roman period) with a computer keyboard, a cathedral rose window, a Gothic arch…
